Evan Rees is a voice teacher, music director, and pianist based in New York City.

Shortly after moving to New York City in 2013, Evan was a rehearsal pianist for a reading of Kander & Ebb’s Kiss of the Spider Woman starring Audra McDonald.  A few months later, he was a rehearsal pianist and vocal coach for A Bed And A Chair at New York City Center Encores!—a concert of music by Stephen Sondheim, arranged by Wynton Marsalis, directed by Tony Award–winner John Doyle, and starring Bernadette Peters, Norm Lewis, Jeremy Jordan, and Cyrille Aimée.

In 2015, Evan worked as a rehearsal pianist and vocal coach for the original Broadway production of Kander & Ebb’s The Visit, starring Chita Rivera and Roger Rees. The show was directed by John Doyle and music directed by Broadway veteran David Loud, under whom Evan has had the privilege of working multiple times over the years.

Evan then took over, in 2016, as music director for the acclaimed, Lucille Lortel Award–winning Fiasco Theater revival of Into the Woods—for its fourth and fifth incarnations: at the Menier Chocolate Factory in London, and on tour across the U.S. During the very successful London run, the London Independent wrote that Evan “conjur[ed] wonderful sounds” from the piano, and the Financial Times commented that he “[kept] Sondheim’s rippling score bubbling through the show.” The U.S. national tour that followed would go on to win the Helen Hayes Award for Outstanding Visiting Production for its run at the John F. Kennedy Center, and two L.A. Drama Critics Circle Awards, for Best Direction and Best Ensemble.
